  Child Support Guidelines Whether you are a non-custodial parent or the custodial parent, it is important to understand the rules governing child support. The purpose of  child support  is to provide for the needs of a child. These payments can include medical care, education, and other expenses. The child support formula is based on the parents’ incomes and the custody arrangement. When a parent is granted full custody of a child, the court may order the other parent to pay child support. This is done through a series of periodic payments. If the non-custodial parent’s income changes, the support payments may be adjusted. When there is an adjustment, the party who is receiving support is notified and has the right to request a review of the case. If the parties cannot agree on the change, a Support Magistrate or court hearing may be held to determine a new Support order.
